What is MathHammer?
In games like Warhammer 40k, "MathHammer" is the use of probability and statistics to make more informed decisions before & during the game. MathHammer can take many different forms and the decisions that you'll be applying it to can vary quite a lot.
Examples of different forms of MathHammer
- Calculating the average outcome of rolling dice. E.g The average result of rolling 2D6 is 7.
- Calculating the average outcome of a single step in an attack sequence. E.g. Firing 3 shots at BS3 will on average yield 2 hits.
- Running a simulation of a sequence many times and then analysing the results (stochastic simulation / Monte Carlo method).
The more basic tasks can be done in your head if you learn how. As it gets trickier you'll likely want to turn to a calculator, a spreadsheet or a dedicated MathHammer tool such as UnitCrunch.
How MathHammer can help you as a 40k player
- MathHammer can be used to aid army list building. Understanding the probability of certain outcomes that a unit might face will help in unit selection, especially if you're catering for a specific situation, such as:
- a specific game plan,
- trying to minimize your list's weaknesses,
- leaning into and maximising your lists strengths.
- MathHammer can be used to help with in-game decisions. Knowing the likely outcome of each of your options at a given time can help you make a good decision. Examples include:
- how to sort target priority,
- whether to risk a charge,
- when & how to split fire,
- getting the most out of a strategem,
- how best to avoid overkill / wasted damage output.
- MathHammer can help you learn how to play Warhammer 40k! Taking your understanding of the game mechanics to the point where you're considering probability will help cement your grasp on key concepts.
There is more to strategy than just MathHammer
Helpful as it is, MathHammer should be applied in addition to practice (rather than replace it). There are many aspects to the game that MathHammer cannot help you with. It's important to remember that MathHammer techniques and tools are only a part of what makes good players and strategies.
"MathHammer", "Mathammer" and "Math Hammer" appear to be interchangeable. Round here we say "MathHammer" which also seems to be the most common spelling in use.
